The FIC has a dual focus to its mandate. On the one hand, it is to assist in identifying the proceeds of crime, and combating money laundering and the financing of terrorist activity. A strong financial intelligence system contributes to the fight against crime and corruption – and the safety and security of all South Africans. On the other hand, these activities are designed to assist in making the financial system intolerant to being abused by criminals, which directly underpins the integrity and stability of the financial sector.
